I created the sestina along with geometric illustrations that accompany each line. The illustrations echo the dynamic of the situation at stake in the poem. journey: the ancient ocean

Since July 31st, I had my first encounter with company this week. Monday afternoon Christelle, Katerina and I drove almost 9 hours in total to see the great earthwork - Robert Smithson's Spiral Jetty. We had to take absolute backroads, putting along terrain that was constantly changing. We got lost several times on the way to the Jetty, and as a result saw the most incredible landscape of the Great Salt Lake, or as we called it - the Ancient Ocean. Moving from pavement to gravel to dirt, we wound our way through fields and fields, eventually making it to Rozel Point - a cove of the Ancient Ocean just before the Spiral Jetty. The terrain there was otherworldly - made of salt, air bubbles and animal tracks that outweighed the three of us put together. I felt as though I was on the astral plane - moonwalking over the air bubbles into the infinite unknown. The salt bed was so vast and so flat you couldn't make out where the lake began at all. The terrain became even more cosmic when we finally found the Jetty. The salt was pink and crystalline under my feet. I picked up large flats of salt to harvest at home as well as small rocks from the middle of the spiral. At this time, the Jetty is not submerged. The salt bed is so vast around it that you can walk almost a mile into the lake beyond the Jetty, and can cut between spirals on salty ground. In fact, beyond the Jetty was where I realized the weight of this experience. I looked out onto this field of pink to the distance where grey mountains rose from the lake like islands. Beyond the pink was a glassy surface that sparkled, silvery and blue. I looked behind me at Christelle and Katerina scattered along the Jetty, and felt so in love with the experience I was having. Breaking the glass a crane rose out of the water with silvery grace, and I began to cry at the beauty I couldn't believe I was seeing. Soon a few other cranes came to meet it. We were alone with the jetty and the cranes as the sun went down. Driving back in darkness I realized I was leaving the most peaceful place I had ever been.

Shamefully, here in Deer Valley I have yet to disconnect entirely, and still spend a bit of each day in this relative paradise perusing other virtual worlds. I was unaware of Assouline Publishing until today while doing some research on Jean-Paul Goude. Assouline (like Taschen books) carries an assortment of lifestyle and culture titles, most of which remind me of my mother's coffee table in Los Angeles - home to titles such as Warhol, 60s Advertisements and Architecture Now! While I realize that these books may have been my earliest exposure to arts publishing, and admit to many junior high school afternoons spent in Taschen's Los Angeles flagship, these days I tend to choose artist books of more intimate or pointed subject matter over broad-scope titles. However, I did find one outstanding object to pine over today from Assouline.

if you checked out These New Puritans' video for "Attack Music," you know that artist and Cheap Champagne bud, Juan Antonio Olivares has been stomping around London for the past few months. today he graced our eyes with his new creations from across the pond.

cc: what gets you going about tromp l'oeil?

jo: I'm not entirely sure why I'm fascinated by trompe l'oeils. I guess that's why visual tricks are fun. I like that "Aha!" moment of realizing that what you think you are seeing is really something else. It's a traceable genre in art since Parrhasius' painting of a curtain in a competition with Zeuxis in 5th century Athens. I think the first trompe l'oeil I saw (or didn't see) was this huge boulder in our yard that my dad found on the street and was actually made of styrofoam.

cc: yves saint laurent?

jo: I generally love YSL's collections--such a great balance of timelessness, elegance, and ahead-of-the-curve subtlety. Yves Saint Laurent led such an exciting life (and was also an avid collector of art).

cc: blackberry messenger?

jo: BBM is so instant that it makes me feel like I'm right next to someone even when they're in another country. (I have really bad separation anxiety)

cc: tools?

jo: Tools reference every possible thing that they can make. Atleast to me they do. I think they're really beautiful objects. There's so much craft in tools themselves. So I've made them subjects in my photographs.

cc: poppers?

jo: Poppers make me considerably less rational. They're an occasionally much needed break. Sometimes I like not thinking too deeply and feeling more ;)

cc: richard serra?

jo: His sculptures can potentially kill you. They have such incredible presence. And they are just made of steel, a material that is everywhere, present even in the buildings where the sculptures are exhibited, it's just hidden behind the walls. I love how their forms invite you to engage with them.

cc: daylight?

jo: There's nothing like feeling sunlight hit your skin. It feels so primal. I'm really into morning light too, it feels intrinsically romantic.

cc: cuban sandwich?

jo:

cc: basketball shorts?

jo: I started wearing basketball shorts kind of as a joke because I'm really bad at the sport. But I like the way the material moves. It's like an everyman's silk.

cc: kinkos?

jo: Kinko's (now known as Fedex Office) is such a ubiquitous establishment in the world, specifically because it's tied to Fedex, a company whose goal is to link the world and collapse a sense of distance between people. I make work in Kinkos because they have offices everywhere (weirdly there's only one in London) and I want to bypass a sense of 'skill' or 'technique' in what I make--essentially anyone could be making what I am making.

While New York City is, without a doubt, a mecca for photographers of all shapes, sizes and visions, so much of the contemporary photography coming from the urban environment, departs from the cityscape completely. Veronica Torres is a photographer living and working in New York, though her pictures appear disinterested in the energy of the urban. In fact, her work seems to be made through a lens more painterly than it is filmic. Through it, she captures a spirit of intimacy and longing between her subjects and their environments. Her work is currently on view in the exhibition viscera at Spice Factory Gallery in the Navy Yard section of Brooklyn.

To get a clearer glimpse into the eye of the artist, we asked Veronica to respond in any way she felt appropriate to the following prompts.

CC: What gets you going about... leg tattos?

VT: I was tripping on mushrooms on my 24th birthday and was given a stick and poke tattoo of a flower on my knee. Surprisingly, it felt great.

CC: Longing?

VT: Time. Nostalgia

CC: Antifashion?

VT: Every way we communicate with other people is just a way to bounce ideas and to find our clan.

CC: Heart and lungs?

VT: Two things I don't take care of, but should.

CC: Aboveground subway trains?

VT: I try to reserve the aboveground portions of my commute for meditation and scribbling in notebooks. The best is going over the bridge and getting caught in all these various refractions of light.

CC: Rain?

VT: Sometimes it can be the icing on a shitty day, but also can be refreshing and grounding.

CC: Glass?

VT: I worry a lot about accidents and sometimes fret over past situations I've been in that could have turned out disastrous had one factor been different. Glass is kind of just one of those potentially hazardous materials that causes me anxiety.

CC: iPad? [that thing really creeps us out]

VT: I like collecting physical objects and can't really understand it when data becomes this ethereal thing that I always seem to delete/lose. I prefer hand written lists to typed notes, negatives to digital data, and turning pages rather than scrolling down. If I were in the book/movie Fahrenheit 451 I'd be one of those people living in the woods reciting books all day.

CC: Floral wallpaper?

VT: So decadent, beautiful and timeless.

CC: The color trick?

VT: Is this a left brain / right brain thing?

Before moving to California, I remember visiting. I remember trips to Hearst Castle with my mother, my aunt and their parents. I was in training to become a fan of aristocratic histories -their visual wonders, historic homes and trashy gossip. Of course Hearst Castle is visited by thousands of tourists each year, and after years of visiting ourselves it was time to explore the stories of another house.

Born in 1887 in Brest-Listvosk, Poland - Madame Ganna Walska was well-known and worldly. Though she was a well-known actress and opera singer, her fortunes were gathered from a series of high profile marriages that spanned nations and industries. Her sixth and final marriage was to a man by the name of Theos Casimir Bernard - an accomplished American practitioner of Yoga and Tibetan Buddhism (in fact he spearheaded the department of Indian and Tibetan Studies that still exists at Columbia University). In 1941 - at Bernard's encouragement - Walska purchased a 37 acre property known as the Cuesta Linda Estate in Santa Barabara, CA. She intended to turn it into a retreat for Tibetan monks and to call her house "Tibetland." The monks never seemed to make it to Santa Barbara, and after divorcing Bernard, Madame Ganna Walska changed the name of the estate to "Lotusland," in homage to a rare type of Lotus plant that was blooming in one of the property's ponds. Lotusland has since been preserved as a botanical garden.

Having his character sip on a cigarette during "To be or not to be" was just one idea our friend and leading man, Dan Sickles, threw around between rehearsals for Steve Boyle's production of Hamlet. Hamlet will be shown in rep along with Shakespeare's The Winters Tale. These productions mark the first season of the newly-formed Global Shakespeare Ensemble, a group of actors founded by the director. The show opens May 21st. Hope to see you there!

I have spent the last few months getting ephemeral with vvitalny. Below is an instructional video we made this week to show how we pronounce vvitalny. The video was then projected onto a brick wall on Meserole street in Bushwick, Brooklyn and refilmed.

For this project, witalny teamed up with Brooklyn based artist, Jesse Mann, to begin working with large-scale projections in the public space.

The last time I saw such rope-like athleticism captured on film was at Tim Hamilton's SS10 fashion presentation in Tribeca where he screened his spring looks via a film made by photographer Collier Schorr. For their music video "Attack Music," UK band These New Puritans reveal a similar celebration of strength on film. For me, creativity and athleticism have always been mutually foreign, but these days it seems that the beauty of strength and endurance is taking on its own role in artistic work.

This weekend, performance artist Desi Santiago is taking over Saturday Sessions. Get ready for a dance party! Santiago will be presenting “WORK FOR LOVE II”, a piece that channels the crossover NYC nightlife culture into fashion and art worlds. Afterwards, Saint Buck will get you moving. Join us!

Desi Santiago is a NYC based Puerto Rican artist. His practice spans from 1990 to the present with a strong foundation begun in NYC nightlife culture and crossing over into fashion and art worlds. Santiago's work draws from, addresses, and utilizes the respective vocabularies and iconography of these worlds to create ceremonial experiences and relational performances which deal with identity, exchange, and the duality of mourning/celebration. His practice is that of "the host", wherein the body is the channel and receptor for circumstance, experience, and identities to pass through resulting in a visual vocabulary of object, installation, and performance.

Perhaps the most captivating thing at the Tino Sehgal show were the two people I saw dramatically making out at the bottom of the void. It is unclear how they fit into the Tino Sehgal performance - a three part conversation about progress. Or if they were part of The Guggenheim museum programs at all. I'd like to think they weren't.

My suspicion is confirmed, that going to the armory show on a saturday is a mistake. I was once told by an art teacher that going through museums should be a quick process. That the best way to see art in a context of such overwhelming breadth was to walk very quickly past and stop only when you're natural attraction tells you its time to stop. And so was my technique in yesterday's crowd. I did find these in the mix.

Art Since the Summer of ’69 is proud to present TWICE UPON A TIME, Benjamin Valenza’s first solo show in New York City. A large L- shaped yellow metal plate, deeply corroded by acid at four points, performs as an abstract panther in the show, or simply as an abstract painting. The work is the result of Valenza’s experiments with materials and carelessness, or rather of his love of ‘heavy duty’ materials.

According to Sigmund Freud, our memories of others are incomplete. When we try to remember we can only glean the resonant details, a particular smell, a way of gesturing, a dermal texture, parts of the whole. What is left is the body in bits and pieces.

The negative, the scanner, the x-ray. These become visionary technologies that can jog memory, and at times exaggerate the parted nature of the whole.

Icon: Buffy Sainte-Marie

When asked about our influences as a band, Jordan and I will always talk about Buffy Sainte-Marie. A Canadian-born folk singer and songwriter, she drew from her Native American heritage, her personal struggles, and the politics of her time to create music that influenced her contemporaries of the 60's and 70's and continues to make an impact today. When we started this project, some of our first songs were Buffy covers and you'll still hear us play them. Her voice, music, and even personal style are one of a kind. Here are some videos!

Jordan Robin and Aleksandra McCormack are spirits born of illusions that span the coasts of this country West to East, and beyond the liquid bridge of the Atlantic to Dublin, to Göteborg, to Warsaw and Moscow. As Cheap Champagne they continue their travels jingling about this New Amsterdam destination as resident tourists of the contemporary dreamscape. In these entries lies the residue of a couple of show ponies. Let it converge and make new melodies.
